Green Tara: The Gentle and Graceful Female Protector
Green Tara, known as Tara in Sanskrit and revered as the Holy Saviouress Mother Buddha, is an embodiment of compassion and protection in Buddhism. In ancient China, she was referred to as Dolma or Dolma Guanyin. Tara manifests in many forms, including the Twenty-One Taras and the Five Taras, all of whom are emanations of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva. Among these, Green Tara is the principal deity, encompassing all the virtues of the other twenty Taras.
Green Tara is renowned for her ability to rescue beings from eight great fears, including dangers from fire, lions, elephants, snakes, water, imprisonment, thieves, and non-human entities, earning her the title “Saviouress from the Eight Perils.” Additionally, she transforms the “doubt” among the five poisons of human behavior—greed, anger, ignorance, pride, and doubt—into perfect wisdom. She is particularly known for her protective qualities towards women and children.
Her mantra embodies all the powers of pacification, increase, attraction, and subjugation, eliminating all suffering and fulfilling the wishes of sentient beings. She grants wealth, longevity, peace, and health, removes obstacles and illnesses, and ultimately leads beings to liberation from the cycle of birth and death, guiding them to the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Due to her swift protection and fierce ability to destroy evil forces, she is also known as the “Swift and Brave Saviouress.”
