Description
Akashagarbha Bodhisattva, known in Sanskrit as ākāśagarbha and transliterated as Ahkashagarbha in Chinese, is also revered by the secret name of Kucandra Vajra. In Chinese Buddhism, Akashagarbha is translated as the Venerable Void-Womb Bodhisattva, Treasure of Space Bodhisattva, or Light of Space Bodhisattva, and is one of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas in Mahayana Buddhism.
Akashagarbha Bodhisattva is revered as the embodiment of wisdom, merit, and wealth among the countless bodhisattvas. His wisdom, merit, and wealth are as vast and boundless as space itself, enabling him to fulfill the righteous wishes and desires of all those who practice and uphold the precepts. His sacred name reflects his ability to bestow infinite benefits upon countless beings.
Akashagarbha possesses the power to grant joy and benefit to all. The term “Treasure” signifies infinite merit and wisdom, while “Space” denotes vastness. The “Great Assembly Sutra” highlights that Akashagarbha is like a wealthy benefactor who, when approached by those in need, generously offers aid. Thus, Akashagarbha is a bodhisattva who finds joy in rescuing and aiding all sentient beings.
